for the benefit of the community.”
SCCLT is a new co-operative society working to address the chronic shortage of affordable sustainable housing in Somerset, at the same time as creating incubators for new and growing community enterprises. We place tenants at the heart of our governance structure, so that the land trust is always accountable to its intended beneficiaries. At the same time, any Somerset resident can join and have a say in how the society is run; people outside the traditional county can also join, with limited voting rights. For the last two years, some pioneering activists have been taking on small plots around Taunton - most notably the back garden of 10 East Reach, owned by Somerset Co-operative Community Land Trust. Some unpromising and frankly messy land has produced wonders - huge pumpkins, lush kale, tasty courgettes and broad beans. Much of this produce has been passed on to Taunton Open Door to help the homeless people they support.
But now the project is at a crossroads - there are oppotunities to develop and enlarge it, but also a shortage of people to make it happen. We need you!
A great chance to visit 10 East Reach, find out about the gardening work and be part of an exciting new project is coming up. We're holding a community gardening event at 3pm on the 23rd November at 10 East Reach. Please join us to learn more about urban growing and small scale agriculture with not only David Clegg (head gardener at 10 East Reach) but also James Dexter of Wild Geese Acres, a local smallholder with the Ecological Land Co-op.
If you've ever known the joy of getting your hands properly dirty, you won't want to miss this.

Free wireless broadband is provided, as well as access to a shared garden to the rear. A proportion of rent is set aside in a fund to assist tenants with improving their housing options when they move on.
We offer opportunities to play an active role in a friendl organisation run on co-operative and sustainable principles. It is a no-smoking flat; pets may be considered.
Preference will be given to active volunteers and those in unaffordable housing or otherwise in housing need. Prospective tenants should be reliable and socially aware.
